Ingredients: Dulse seaweed. 20g

Allergens: Cannot guarantee crustacean and mollusc free.

Storage: This product is supplied ambient. Store in a cool dry place and best to use within a year. Shelf Life up to 24 months.

What is it?

Dulse is sustainably harvested from UK shores and then washed several times to remove all the sand, molluscs, and any crustaceans. It is then slowly dried over 12 hours and then during the last hour we toast it to maximise the flavour.

Dulse is then blended into smaller flakes and sealed into our Sea Herbs pouch to preserve the flavour and make it easy to use and store in your pantry or spice cupboard.

What does it taste like?

Dulse has a fantastic savoury, umami, and salty flavour. It is a vibrant purple colour and brings a hint of a meaty, bacon flavour too.

Nutritional Information

Dulse contains high levels of calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium which is essential for your bone health and strength and can help lower your blood pressure and health of your thyroid gland.

Also has good levels of vitamin A which helps improve your eye sight and acts as a antioxidant. Dulse is also rich in vitamin C which helps the body increase its white blood cell count and contributes to growth and repair. Dulse is also high in fibre which helps with your digestive system.

In addition B12 is found in Dulse which is fantastic for vegetarians and vegans as B12 is usually found in meats. Vitamin B12 helps keep your blood and nerve cells healthy and helps make DNA. It also helps prevent megaloblastic anemia, a blood condition that makes people tired and weak.

How to use it?

Cooking with Dulse brings a vibrant flavour to whatever you’re cooking with.

An all-time favourite dish to cook is dulse with mashed potato. It adds something extra special to the potatoes. Simply prepare your potatoes as normal and add a tbsp of dulse and a sprinkle of sea salt and turmeric, before cooking. Once the potato is cooked, drain the water away and add a big dollop of butter.

Season with a little more sea salt and white pepper. Mash into a smooth rich velvet creamy potato heaven. Serve by itself with a sprinkle of cheese on or with smoky beans.

Bread and dulse also partner together well and create a perfect harmony of flavour. From a cooks’ sourdough recipe through to a simple cheese scone recipe, dulse packs a lot of flavour and punch to your baking.

A (VERY) BRIEF HISTORY OF LAVER SEAWEED AND LAVERBREAD IN WALES

September 15, 2021 2 min read

No one knows precisely when people in West Wales first started eating laver, some say it was first introduced as a survival food by the Vikings, while others say it goes back to the very first inhabitants of Wales. I am a betting man so I like to bet that it was the first coastal inhabitants, and I would to take a bow to the very first man or women who took that bold step into the unknown world of laver seaweed and put it on their plate....
