The only salt blend you will ever need, actually it’s the only salt you will ever need. We use the finest crunchy sea flakes from Halen Mon mixed with our dried toasted handpicked laver flakes and a sprinkle of toasted dulse to create the perfect salt.
Ingredients: Halen Mon sea salt, laver seaweed, dulse seaweed.
Allergens: Cannot guarantee crustacean or mollusc free.
Storage: Store in a cool dry place. Normal shelf life 12-12 months.
What is it?
It is hand harvested Welsh Sea Salt mixed with sustainably harvested laver and dulse seaweed. The salt is filtered naturally via a mussel bed and a sandbank. Once naturally filtered, the salt water is gently heated in a vacuum, so it boils at a low temperature. Gradually, the water releases steam and turns into a very salty brine. When the concentration of the salt in the water is high enough, Halen Mon release it into shallow crystallisation tanks and leave it there to allow the sea salt crystals to form. Once the crystals have formed, it is then harvested by hand. Finally, the flakes are rinsed in brine until they shine.
The laver and dulse seaweed are always harvested by hand in a sustainable manner and then washed several times to remove all the sand, molluscs, and any crustaceans. It is then slowly dried over 24 hours and then the last hour toasted to maximise the flavour. The seaweed is then flaked and mixed with the sea salt flakes. The mixture is then sealed into pouches. The Perfect Seasoning is then ready.
What does it taste like?
Fresh salty flavours combined with the earthy undertones of the dulse seaweed and then the olive mariney laver seaweed flavour.
Laver seaweed - The king of seaweed superfoods
"Laver seaweed contains more vitamins and minerals than any land-based vegetable".
"Gram for gram, Laver contains more protein than chicken."
"Laver contains 10x as much vitamin A as spinach and 4x times as much vitamin C as apples”.
Laver is rich in potassium, manganese, iron, calcium, and protein. The level of protein is the highest of all the seaweeds and said it can be between 30 - 50% protein. I found this percentage staggering and didn't quite believe it so I've been sending a sample of dried laver to the labs every month for a year to monitor protein levels and how they change according to the seasons: On average per 100g sample, dried laver holds 35% protein, which is amazing, this means, gram for gram, Laver contains more protein than chicken.
In addition, Laverbread is a powerhouse of vitamins and amino acids and has particularly high concentrations of Vitamin A, B2, B9, and C. Amino acids are essential for muscle development and strength. Vitamin A is important for the immune system and helps support bone health and eye health. Vitamin B9 is important in red blood cell formation and healthy cell growth. Vitamin C helps boost antioxidant levels, lower blood pressure and helps the body repair itself.
“Out of all the seaweeds Laver is the healthiest, it’s the king of all the seaweeds”.
Dulse contains high levels of calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium which is essential for your bone health and strength and can help lower your blood pressure and health of your thyroid gland.
Also has good levels of vitamin A which helps improve your eye sight and acts as a antioxidant. Dulse is also rich in vitamin C which helps the body increase its white blood cell count and contributes to growth and repair. Dulse is also high in fibre which helps with your digestive system.
In addition B12 is found in Dulse which is fantastic for vegetarians and vegans as B12 is usually found in meats. Vitamin B12 helps keep your blood and nerve cells healthy and helps make DNA. It also helps prevent megaloblastic anemia, a blood condition that makes people tired and weak.
How to use it?
For me it is a store cupboard essential. And probably one of my desert island necessities. I use it on everything. Season away, from your morning eggs to your rainbow salads to your roasted potatoes. I even have a little pinch in my porridge. Treat it like normal salt and each sprinkle is just simply adding flavour to what you are cooking. Perhaps my all-time favourite is homemade dark chocolate with a sprinkle of Mermaid Confetti on top.
The back story to Seaweed Salt blend
The seaweed salt blend was invented on our multi award winning flag ship Cafe Môr - the first fishing boat, solar powered, seaweed kitchen in the world. Always been a big big fan of fantastic sea salt and it just seemed naturally to pair this salt with laver and dulse seaweed for our seaweed cooking and experimentation.
It also became my second Beach Food Deli item back in 2014 when I started a range of seaweed deli products to help de-seasonalise the business which at the time was 100% reliant on summer trade at markets, events across the UK and Cafe Môr.
Cafe Môr started life in 2010 at local farmers markets on my mums 1970s tablecloth and went on to win best street food in the UK twice and then one of 80 Lonely Planets must visit food trucks around the world and selected to cater for the athletes at the London Olympic games in 2012. Farmers markets turned to Glastonbury music festival then turned into the famous fishing boat where it has been anchored at Freshwater West beach for the past several years. It is now located at The Old Point House in Angle Bay, Pembrokeshire.
